arul

Arul Louis is a Knight International Journalism Fellow currently based in New Delhi at The Energy and Resources Institute where he is working on developing programs to help media better cover climate change and development. The year-long fellowship is a program of the International Center for Journalists in Washington, D.C. A journalist for over 35 years, he has worked for the print media in the United States and India. During the last 14 years he was an editor with the New York Daily News, the fifth largest American daily. There, he has edited the science section and has been the news editor for the technology section. Recently in New Delhi, he organized an Editors' Consultation on Climate Change and Development, bringing together journalists and experts on the topic like Yvo de Boer, the head of the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change, and R. K. Pachauri, the head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to discuss the role of the media and how to improve coverage of the subjects. Louis believes that a clear, fair and accurate coverage of environment and development is essential for a public debate that leads to popular participation in action on climate change and environment that also takes into account the needs of the world's poor. Louis has a Masters degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a Masters degree in politics and international studies from the School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
